Religious Education

Kindergarten-Grade 5

The structure of our K-5 Faith Formation Program reflects the goals of providing opportunities for classroom learning, parent education, home study, worship and Christian service. One monthly meeting is a Parent/Child Day with students participating in grade level classes with a catechist, while parents participate in an adult education session featuring a speaker reflecting  on topics relevant to family faith formation. In the other monthly meeting only the children attend and participate in classes with their catechist. The weeks in between meetings, parents cover selected materials at home with their children. Mass participation remains an integral part of faith formation, and we will offer Liturgy of Word with Children at both the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses. The entire community also comes together for special events such as Family Service Sundays, Epiphany Celebration, and Catechetical (Teacher Recognition) Sunday.

Liturgy of the Word for Children

Good Shepherd Parish provides the opportunity for children ages 4 to 10 to participate in the Liturgy of the Word for Children at the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses during the academic year.  The children are sent by the community to hear the readings proclaimed and explained by a liturgical minister in a way that is designed to be engaging and understandable on their levelAll students are also encouraged to attend Children's Liturgy of the Word weekely at mass.

Religious Education Grades 6-8

6th, 7th & 8th grade class meetings are held on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings.  Classes start about 6:45pm and conclude at 8pm.  Classes are held in 2 6 week blocks for optimum community building and learning.  The year will begin with the kids coming to class first then a parent meeting will be held while the kids are in class at the 2nd evening.  Community & Service are a critical part of our program where the kids will come together to get to know each other and serve the community in some small way as they live out their baptismal promises.

This program is run with volunteer catechists and assistants.  Please be generous with your own time to volunteer as an assistant to these programs so that they may continue.

Confirmation Preparation (Grades 9 & 10)

Our preparation program for the Sacrament of Confirmation is a two year cycle with two main components. One component is small group -- each level meets for 1.5 hours following the Sunday 5 pm Mass (6:00PM-7:30PM) in one semester (Confirmation II in the Fall and Confirmation I in the Spring). The second component is formation. Students should plan to complete the expectations for the formation component in the alternate semester from their small group meetings; however, formation events are available to all students throughout the entire year. Small group meetings include discussions, speakers, videos, and activities. There are many options for engaging in the formation semester including Christian service opportunities, praise & worship, service trips, Leadership Institute (for all students who have participated in the Confirmation II retreat in the Fall), and more. The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the Spring with the date determined by the schedule of the Bishop. Click here for the 2019-2020 program overview.
