Religious Education

Kindergarten-Grade 5

The structure of our K-5 Faith Formation Program reflects the goals of providing opportunities for classroom learning, parent education, home study, worship and Christian service. One monthly meeting is a Parent/Child Day with students participating in grade level classes with a catechist, while parents participate in an adult education session featuring a speaker reflecting  on topics relevant to family faith formation. In the other monthly meeting only the children attend and participate in classes with their catechist. The weeks in between meetings, parents cover selected materials at home with their children. Mass participation remains an integral part of faith formation, and we will offer Liturgy of Word with Children at both the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses. The entire community also comes together for special events such as Family Service Sundays, Epiphany Celebration, and Catechetical (Teacher Recognition) Sunday.  There have been many changes due to COVID, please contact Sue with any questions or if you are not receiving our RE emails.

Liturgy of the Word for Children

Good Shepherd Parish provides the opportunity for children ages 4 to 10 to participate in the Liturgy of the Word for Children at the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses during the academic year.  The children are sent by the community to hear the readings proclaimed and explained by a liturgical minister in a way that is designed to be engaging and understandable on their levelAll students are also encouraged to attend Children's Liturgy of the Word weekely at mass.  Suspended at this time.

Religious Education Grades 6-8

6th, 7th & 8th grade class meetings are held on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings.  Classes are held in 2 6 week blocks for optimum community building and learning.  This year classes will need to take place outside so please be prepared to bring a lawn chair and weather appropriate clothing.  Community & Service are a critical part of our program where the kids will come together to get to know each other and serve the community in some small way as they live out their baptismal promises. Emilia Cowell, our Director of Youth Ministry is now overseeing Middle School Faith Formation. Please contact her for more information on middle school specific events and opportunities.

This program is run with volunteer catechists and assistants.  Please be generous with your own time to volunteer as an assistant to these programs so that they may continue.  There have been many changes due to COVID, please contact Emilia with any questions or if you are not receiving our RE emails.

Confirmation Preparation (Grades 9 & 10)

The goal of our Confirmation program is to equip teens to receive the grace of the Sacrament and be strengthened by the Holy Spirit to live out their faith going forward. We know that teens need both a solid intellectual understanding of the faith as well as real life experiences of Catholic community and  parish involvement. To that end, we offer a two year program made up of both a whole group class experience and “ Building Blocks”- a flexible schedule of events that students can choose to attend . High schoolers meet for class for 6 consecutive weeks per year. ( Confirmation II in the Fall and Confirmation I in the Spring). In addition, students are selecting from a range of formation and service opportunities that might suit their interests. Each of these events provide students with a number of  “Building Block” points towards the total necessary for confirmation. We also encourage Juniors and Seniors to stay involved in our Confirmation program as Youth Leaders through our Leadership Institute. The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the Spring with the date determined by the schedule of the Bishop.

There have been many changes due to COVID, please contact Emilia with any questions or if you are not receiving our Confirmation emails.
